well, silo will be the best bang for your buck i think its still 100 US dollars, but it is modeling specific. Theres trial software and most companies have "learning" software thats limited in rendering size with a watermark in the renders and some loss of functions(water surfaces, hair dynamics, etc.) But they can keep you busy for a couple years :)

some companies for you to look through,
3D studio max
Maya
xsi
Silo
wnd i think wings 3d is free
also , you might wanta check out truespace , they might have an older free version,
that should be a good start for you , hope it helps

Do a search for blender. I haven't really figuered it all out yet, but I have never done 3d rendering. anyways blender is free and already includes the blender to 3ds filter to convert the blender format to 3ds. then you need the 3ds to kex converter from this site.

Not to forget the easiest 3d model editor of all. Very very simple, easy to use and freeware. It's called Metasequoia and is the 3d editor that is mainly used from designer's who construct models for Aerofly Professional (Deluxe). Sometimes I think, Metasequoia is better than gmax, because your getting more faster what you want. Of course you have not this big modifier and effect list as in gmax. But perhaps this is not needed to build up a good model.

What is that (appears) immaculately carved piece in your avatar? Headboard? Ship bow? Inquiring minds want to know!
