I just wanted to let everyone know that I will be working on updating the Two Cow Cove and my various float planes to be G4 compliant. I'll probably start with the field as that will give us another good water field to fly off of.
Does any one know if the G4 swap pages are going to allow duplicate file names from those that are in the G3 pages?
Doug
Edit: Now that the G4 swap pages are open, I will be transferring the aircraft on this thread to the swaps (once I give them a final check).
Edit: 12/21/07 - I've gone through all of my models. Other than the one I have already moved to the G4 swaps, no others need a lot of editing of the mixes to properly run in G4. The Boomerang and M-18 Autogyro still need some editing of the physics to work right, but everything else should import from G3 reasonably well. I may also revisit the F-8 Crusader, as that was the first plane I did with variable geometry wings. The 3D model there could use a little enhancement and it's physics may need a closer look.

Does any one know if the G4 swap pages are going to allow duplicate file names from those that are in the G3 pages?DougIt appears to me that the move to G4 from G3.5 is going to be gradual for a variety of reasons. So, with G3.5 being around awhile, I would strongly recommend that "duplicate file names" be avoided like the plague. Perhaps a host-peculiar title (e.g. "Two Cow Cove_G4") might be a way to satisfy both groups of RFG-X users?

When I first saw the planes that were included in G4, I had not planned on converting my Seawind as it was included. However after I tried the model in G4, I found that it did not have landing gear (even though the plane's description mentions it). So here's the first one.

Here's another.
Novice water pilots beware, this plane is scale and it takes more skill to take-off and land on water than some of the others.
The download has been moved to the swap page and has been given a water rudder to improve handling on water.

The embark/debark feature works as designed in G4. That was one thing that would never work in G3. The gear would just extend into the ground, without lifting the nose.
Download moved to swaps.

Updated with real floats now. Also a good contender for the new G4 game of coconut polo. Be sure to read the aircraft description to understand what the switches do.

While the G4 conversion of the Aero Canard came up with a nice surprise, by making the nose lift work, the M-18 Auto-Gyro did not come off as well. The blades I used for it are not in G4 and the defaults the program used make it nearly unflyable. Also the nose wheel will not steer the craft any more. It was always touchy in G3, but it's useless now. This one is going to take some serious re-work. More than I want to deal with tonight.

Note this is not a G3X file, but a RFX one. I had to add the extension because the forum does not allow you to post RFX files. Remove the added extension before trying to import. Admins take note.
Fixed. Thank you for alerting us to this. You should now be able to upload RFX files directly without the renaming workaround.

Here's a few more planes. I didn't post screen shots this time, so look at the respective entries on the G3 swaps if you want to see what it looks like before downloading. All have had the switch assignments and mixes corrected for G4.
The flight dynamics of the F-16 & FA-18 have been reworked and the downloads moved to the swap page.

I don't normally post AVs, but I love this aircraft. The model was originally posted by Eric Foreman with modeling credit going to WebWeb. It's physics were a bit questionable in G3, so I've completely redone them for G4. It's a blast to fly off of the water now.

I didn't make the physics acurate when i posted that, thanks for fixing it. :)Thanks as well, it's a great model.
I've been playing with it a little more and think the upthrust should be reduced a bit more. I've taken it to -5 degrees so it doesn't lift off as fast and is a little easier to hold inverted.

dhk79, you have absolutely hit the ground running! Thanks!
CharlesNo problem. I'm working on getting all of my custom content converted over, mainly since I sold my copy of G3. If I want to keep them, I need to make them work in this version. So far the only ones that have given me much of a problem are the Auto-Gyro and the UFO. Both of those were pretty far out in left field for G3, but they really give G4 some heartburn. I haven't totally given up on them, I've just moved them to the bottom of the list.
Right now I'm working on Maxkop's Sikorsky S-39. It's another one who's physics in G3 were all messed up, but it's a cool plane so I feel it's worth my time. I may have to get Maxkop's permission to repost that one as an EA however. It did not import correctly into G4. It came in as all silver (i.e. no colorscheme) and it took me a while to figure out what was wrong and get it fixed.
A note for creators and others importing from G3: The colorscheme that G4 imports is only the one the plane was created with, and it must be named the same as what is originally stored in it's KEX file. If a plane imports without a colorscheme; G4 will give you an error telling you the name of the file it couldn't find, but it also will not be able to use any other scheme either.
To fix this problem, copy the scheme's TGA file to the G3 custom plane directory that stores the aircraft's KEX file (making sure that has the same name as what the KEX is looking for). Reimporting the KEX file into G4 will then correct the colorscheme problem.

Here's a G4 AV for Maxkop's Sikorsky S-39. Excellent looking 3D model, but the physics were not that great (especially in G4). The fuselage wireframe was not sized properly and since it is a floating body it was not interacting with the water correctly. In this case it was easier to delete everything that was there and start over.
This is about the best I could do without having access to the original 3D model. The struts were all modeled (or assembled) as parts of the fuselage or wing, so they are not individual components. This throws off the shape of the fuselage in RF, but I compensated by adjusting drag values and fudging the CG location. Not perfect, but it is flyable.
Previously I had reported problems with importing this aircraft into G4, but I was importing my stored copy of it which had the colorscheme names changed. If you have an original S-39 download, this AV should work correctly.

Here's an F4U Corsair. I will next be working on a Reno Racer version of the Corsair, known as the Super Corsair.
I just made a small change to the 3D model. The spinner was displaying as white, rather than the silver it should have been.

dhk79
11-19-2007, 12:50 PM
Save the GFX file wherever, but the G4 default is \My Documents\RealFlight G4\RFX.
Then from within G4 go to the Simulation\Import menu. From there select RealFlight Archive and direct it to the file. That's all there is to it, the aircraft will now show up on your selection menu.

it does this on teh skorsky and the miss hiperon....

You may not import Aircraft Variants or Colorschemes for Base aircraft which are not installed.
A Base Aircraft would be the Stock Aircraft bundled with G4, and Expansion Packs.
For custom models it would be the Entire Aircraft files with the _EA filenames from the swaps or this Forum Thread.
Only after you have the Base Aircraft models or EA's installed/imported then you may install an Aircraft Variant (_AV) or ColorScheme (_CS)

It does not matter where it's downloaded to, as long as you can find it when you attempt the "import" from within the Simulator.
Common places for storing downloaded content are:
c:\download\realflight , Desktop, My Documents, etc... it's up to you how you want to organize your downloaded content.

ok lets take miss hyperion for example.
i imported this guys AV for it. gave me that "cannot import a model you dont have loaded" message, so i went and found the origon 3dx or whatever from teh swap pages, now i have miss hyperion, now what do i do with this guys miss hyperion AV, and what does it do?
dhk79

You first load the Miss Hyperion EA from the swaps, then my AV and it'll update the model for G4 such that it has a real hull & can fly off of the water.

Thanks for all the hard work on the planes!...they are really great...question about deleting the files that we download here
and import into RF G4...as in G3, don't we need to keep these files handy someplace because updating G4 can destroy imported content?.or am I confused (quite possible)..thanks, John H.
dhk79
12-17-2007, 12:24 PM
After you've imported them, you do not NEED to keep the downloaded files. Routine program updates will not destroy what you've imported.
If you are like many people, however, you will want a backup copy of files you want to keep in case of a computer crash. These may be then kept elsewhere, without effecting your installation. If you trust KE and all of the posters to keep all the files intact in this forum, the chose is yours to use that as your back-up.

I really like the Mermaid, I think it is my new favorite plane for use on water.
I tried ramming trees/boats/walls and making the pilot go flying but apparently he is super glued in there :(
The Mermaid is incredibly easy to land, at an idle it comes in at about ~27 mph, straight and easy with no corrections at all needed once you've got her lined up. All you need to do is flare a little at the end and the landings are super smooth.
I'm not sure why I like this plane so much but I really do. It is also kind of fun to get some speed then go straight up, cut the throttle until you stall, then slam both sticks forward and watch the plane tumble out of the sky, then see how close to the ground you can get before you try to recover :)
Anyway, great plane dhk79!

I used 3 sections, center section has no dihedral, main section has 5 degrees, and then a tip which has 12 degrees and tapers to a NACA 0009. Tail feathers were all NACA 0010.
These were all estimated from looking at various pictures, I do not know for sure that they are correct.

Anyway, great plane dhk79!Thanks. This is not one to go for outside loops with. Once the speed in the loop drops to where your tail feathers lose effectiveness, the offset engine (with it's up-thrust, pulling outside the loop) will induce a wicked tumble. Then again I highly doubt the full scale is rated for outside loops either.

I did notice something odd with the Mermaid... I broke off one wing on accident and was able to fly completely normal. So I jammed the other wing into a tent and sure enough, I was able to fly relatively normal with no wings :)
I did notice it doesnt float when coming in for landing without wings, but it sure does fly around well.
