... I am trying to convert Cowboy's Nieuport 28 C for G4 and have renamed it using "manage user files", and exported it and even renamed the file that I exported. When I try and upload it to the swaps I get a message saying that there is already an aircraft by that name, Please rename from within Real flight and re-export. I did and still get the same message. Am I doing something wrong or is the server still messed up. Any suggestions?

what did you rename it to?

...Nieuport 28C G4. Tried to upload it. No go.

you'll probably want to go a little more extensive than that since there is a Nieuport 28C in EP 1. Try adding something to the beginning, maybe just change Edgemans to Cowboys or whatever

The server is still bad.

... I'll give that a try.

changing it to 'Cowboys Nieuport 28 C' and got the same:

There is already an aircraft by the same name.
Please rename the aircraft from within RealFlight and export again.

Just read Blades reply. I guess I'll give it a try after the server gets well again. I didn't have this trouble with the color schemes I renamed and uploaded.
Oh well....

... the G4 server is reading the KEX file to get the aircraft name. I've renamed, exported the renamed file, deleted the g3x file from RF, imported the renamed file, and then exported again, and filally tried to upload to the swaps. Still no go.

I'm so confused.... I didn't have a bit of trouble with the color schemes for Herc40

The actual name of the aircraft exists in 11 places. you have to change them all manually in order to post a new version of a KEX file that already exists in the swaps. Remember it is all one database so the KEX could also be in the G3 swaps.

Search for my post that delineates the procedure for renaming.

... that I must unzip the RFX or G3x file to edit those files. I read the post by you,
( yes, I am one of the few who actually use the search button ). The .bse file eludes me, the only place I can find it is when I unpack the file. Also how is the KEX file edited?

Jim,

Are you using G3 or G4?

Also how is the KEX file edited?Sorry, not possible - but you can rename it

.. and attempting to convert some of the 3.5 aircraft over for the G4 swaps. Guess I'll have to pass on this one though, Tried everything in dhk79's post on how to rename a file for G4 and when I imported it. the color scheme was white and it gave me error messages.
Sorry Cowboy. I gave it the good ol' college try. Now I think I need a beer.

G4 can use most G3 files as is, however, some files do need a little editing to fly right in G4. So if this is the case:

1) First import the original G3X file into G4.
2) Adjust the physics as needed.
3) Then rename the files G4 is using, so that the aircraft displays correctly, with the new name in G4.
4) After that, just export the new EA from G4.

... and I can get a .rfx file with the correct aircraft G4 name, and it will reimport into G4 just fine ( it even shows up as the renamed aircraft ); but, when I try to upload it to the swaps, I get the 'we already have this aircraft, Please rename within realflight and re-export.' error message. Tried editing the files per your post of 12-23-07 but then real flight 'loses' my renamed aircraft.
I was able to un-pack, edit, and then repack the rfx file, but I ran into two problems. First problem; could not import the repacked .rfx file and got a message that the file did not contain all the files needed to import that type of file. So I tried to import the KEX file. Second problem; found that was a Big mistake, that got the aircraft into G4 but, the plane tips up on it's nose, and when I go to edit the physics the aircraft is some generic trainer wireframe, and I get loads of errors about missing frame components. I assume that the physics would need to be completely redone. I think I'll just pass on this as it looks like it will take more work and talent than I am able to muster. :(

...CONFUSED! I decided you just edit the .bse file as some of the other files get 'edited' when you rename and export the aircraft. Found the aircraft ( G4 didn't lose it this time ) and exported it. Uploaded to the swaps and ( insert trumpet blast with ruffles and flourishes here ...) IT Worked!!!!!
Now if I can just figure out just what the heck I did......

The BSE file is needed to marry the KEX file to a colorscheme. I fould that if any of the names or content of the files (COLORSCHEME, RFVEHICLE, BSE, KEX, TGA) or the name of the custom model directory is off; it all goes to hell in one form or another.

.... after a few brewskis, I had another go at it. Success! Wrote everything down this time so I can duplicate my efforts without having to rely on my somewhat hazy memory. Thanks to all for the help.
