Hello there, my name is Axl and I'm new to the forums. I don't know if this is the right place to post this but I'd like to request a Funstar plane. I've found many planes I flew and saw in real life in this wonderful simulator but the Funstar is very special to me because it is the only plane I've built from scratch (with my uncle's help) when I was 16 years old.
I've uploaded some very old pictures of it. Unfortunately I couldn't bring it with me when I moved to the U.S .
I've also uploaded the original Funstar picture.
If anybody can design this plane for me I will be eternally grateful.. I mean it!
Thanks a lot for reading!

Would you want it to look like the center picture? Do you have any more pictures of your plane?

Thanks for replying!
I'd love it to look like my old plane and yes I got more pictures.
I even got a video of it so that you can listen to the engine sound because I don't remember what it was. I'll be posting it all right now.
I'm leaving the dimensions of the original Funstar I got from a webpage. They are supposed to be the same as my plane's since we built it from the original plan.

Here's the link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQQpbfTh-8E

Here's the technical info I got from the internet:

Hello,
I don't know what's wrong but I already posted a reply to your question sir. A message appeared after clicking on submit reply was too quick for me to read but I had posted more pictures and a video of the plane. Wrote that reply more than 30 minutes ago.
I guess I'll post everything again.

When you first join the forum they have some software that checks new posts and sometimes they're put on hold for one of the admins to okay, it happened to me to when I first joined.

Got another question. I looked around and the only thing I seen was an ARF of that plane, did you build yours from an ARF kit, or did they have a full kit before the ARF came out. I ask because yours looks a little different than the ARF. I like that airplane so I'm looking into it.

kinda looks like the Phoenix models ARF of the Funstar but with Sig Somethin' Extra Wings

Very similar aircraft.

The Rudder is a slightly different design on the Op's aircraft. That and the wings having a different tip design, I would say the Op had an older model possibly not the same manufacturer but of similar design. Phoenix Models may have purchased the rights to the Funstar name and created a similar model.

Hi again,
We actually built it with spare wood my uncle had in his workshop. All I remember is we used the Funstar's plan to get the shape of the parts, so it has some variations like the tip of the wings which are different from the original funstar. All the measurements should be the same! I got more pictures on the way once my previous reply is approved by the moderators. Thank you!

I'm working on several projects right now but I can put something together for you out of other aircraft I've modeled. Here's a picture of something I just cooked up, but it needs more work. Please let me know from what you see where it needs to be changed. And the fact yours was custom built helps since mine is custom made from your pictures.

Wow! That just brought me a big smile! And you call that something you just cooked? Looks perfect! The model is 99% perfect. It just needs the black lines around the cockpit and also the colors are glossy but wow I'm so excited now! I attached a link to the video of the plane in a ptrvious post that hasn't been approved yet in which you can hear the engine. Also, I know the plane is supposed to be a 3D plane but I want it to fly more like a sports plane please. Thanks a ton!

Okay good.. I'm glad you like it. I'll tone down the glossy finish after I get the little details fixed. I can't do anything to match your engine sound, the only thing I have is the built-in engines from RF. If you know how to use the RF editor you can change the engine sound and see which one you like, what type of engine did you have on it? And since you said you just want to fly it as a sport plane I'll adjust the controls so it's a nice sport plane but definitely on the aerobatic side. So it will fly nice but if you give it a lot of throw it will give you pretty good aerobatics. That's the way I used to fly all the time too. But recently I've been pressing it more. Here's the plane I'm working on now, it's pretty much done just a little bit of tweaking left to do. It's one of those 3D Profile planes, and it is quite aerobatic.

Question. Right now your plane is the size from the plans but you might consider if you want the plane to be the same size as the plan or bigger so you can see it better in RF. Of course 40 and a 60 size planes do fly differently because of the larger size but if you're more concerned with flying an old favorite than the size it is I can make it a 60 size so you can see it better. Like from the 54 in wingspan it is now to 64, or even 70. That's totally your call.

Mriya

I do know how to change the engine sound and that is totally fine! I don't really remember what engine it had... The speed of the plane is similar to the Extra 300L's from the simulator.
The size question is quite difficult but I think I'm gonna keep the original size. I think the wingspan is around 50 inches. I actually like the size of the Extra 300L but i think thats 60? If so then make the Funstar a 60 size plane then. By the way the plane you are working on looks fantastic. Seems light and definetly 3D! Thanks again!

Okay the original size it is, that's what it is in the picture I posted too. Here's the spec's I found for it at Tower Hobbies. I've actually seen two different set of specs but I'm using this one from the link below. I started working on the physics for it but I needed to stop and do some chores around the house, but I'll get back to it probably later tonight. I'm looking forward to seeing it fly.

Just a short update. I have the plane flying now and am fine tuning the flight physics and also fine tuning the model graphics a little bit here and there. I think you'll like it and it won't be much longer just enough time to tweak it a bit more. I have limited time to work on it today but I'll sneak in some time if I can. Right now the wingspan and length are what the specs say from the Tower Hobbies link I put in the other post and it looks good and fly's good.

Thanks a lot for the work you are doing, I can't wait to fly my baby once again!
I'll be heading out soon to spend some time with my fiancee outside but I'll be back later. Hopefully it's ready by then! I'm truly excited about this haha! I'm glad the original specs work just fine.

Okay here it is give it a try and let me know if there's any problems I need to fix. You need to click on the link and then rename the file to this when it's downloaded. For some reason their server doesn't use the correct name, the name will be something like attachment.php.

CORRECT NAME: Funstar_EA.RFX

Then import it in RealFlight using the same procedure as a zip file you download from the Swap Pages.

Simulation - Import - RealFlight Archive

I probably ought to mention this. Normally when you create a plane you also create mapping for it and then create a TGA file for the colors and another TGA file for the SPEC Map. But another process, much faster and easier is to add the colors for the plane inside the tool used (3ds Max) to create the 3D model. The last process is much faster and what I used for your plane. The important thing you give up using that process is the ability to create custom color schemes for the plane. So since I didn't have much time to do the custom plane for you I used the simple method, so you can't create a different color scheme for it, the colors are fixed. I thought I better mention that.

ENJOY!

I removed the file look for the final version in post #28.

After I posted the plane I did some other stuff and then thought I'd come back and fly the plane a while. And of course I noticed a couple of things I wished I had done differently so I did a couple of modifications which I think makes it a better plane. The first thing I did was reduce the width of the horizontal stabilizer by 5% because I thought it looked a bit too wide. Then I changed the engine to the engine profile Doug and I created for my first plane, the McCoy 40R, which is the engine that's on the plane with the Red Head. The engine is less powerful but I think it makes the plane more inline with what you said you wanted, a Sport Plane. The built-in engine profile for the OS 46 FX is too strong in my opinion and makes the plane fly too fast to be the fun casual style of flying I think belongs to the plane. So you might want to download this one too and try it out. It's the same name and will be what I post to the swap pages after I wait for your feedback to see if you find any problems with the plane, or the way it fly's.

Hi!
First of all let me tell you thank you, I'm truly grateful for your work on this plane. Been flying it since I woke up. I love it so far! The speed is perfect, roll and yaw and perfect too, what I think needs a little modification is the pitch. I felt it too sensible and when flying inverted, most of the planes have a natural tendency to keep going down once you invert the plane (which I'm used to), but when you do it with the funstar the plane stays almost level. I also feel it's too sensible when I pull the plane.
Everything else is just perfect, the model itself looks awesome!
Again thanks again for your work, like I said on my first post, I'm eternally grateful haha, I'll never forget this.
Is there any way to modify those physics by editing the plane on the simulator?

You're welcome I'm glad you like it. First let me ask about the speed, you say it's perfect.. which build of the plane are you using, the first build or the second build where I said I changed the engine profile? There's a lot of difference in the engine power between them so I want to know which of them you like. Some like more power some like less.

As for the pitch being too sensitive you can easily adjust that using the Quick Edit function. Look in the Aircraft Menu for the Quick Edit menu item and open it. In the dialog box you can set all the control throws and even adjust the engine power. So change the Elevator setting from 24 it's at now down to maybe 20 and try that. If that's still too sensitive go down a little more on that setting. Please report back the setting you find that works best and I'll create another build for you with that setting built in.

For the not continuing to drop down issue I'm not sure if there's a way to set that in the physics or not. BUT.. After looking at your pictures again I didn't place the wing and hstab according to the pictures and that changes flight characteristics. By that I mean a low wing and mid wing plane fly's differently. And it appears in the pictures you uploaded your plane is a low wing not a mid wing like I modeled it. Also the hstab in your picture is higher on the fuselage than the one I created too. Both of those make the plane fly differently so I can change them and see if that helps. Mid wings are know for the best center tracking so I tend to always model a plane that way, but I don't mind making the changes to see if that changes the inverted flight to more like what you're used to. It should if RealFlights physics engine is accurate enough, but I haven't tried it before. So let me do that and you can tell me if it helps, since you're the only one that knows for sure how your model fly's. I'll upload another plane shortly and I'll also set the Elevator from 24 degrees to 20 degrees so it will be less sensitive. I don't mind changing things a few times to try and get your plane just right. So I'll make the changes and upload another plane.

Mriya
07-20-2015, 10:21 AM
I'll do that to the elevator as soon as I get home. I'm grocery shopping right now. I did notice that you made it a mid wing and it makes sense because i've seen that most of 3D foamies are mid wing and are very stable while flying inverted. I'll let you know the changes I did once i get my hands on my computer. And if you could make it low wing that would be more than perfect. Thanks again!

technoid
07-20-2015, 10:29 AM
I just finished making the modifications so try this build and see if it helps. I moved the wing down and hstab up to make it a low wing instead of a mid wing. This should change the flight characteristics some so let me know if it helps, it's not something I've tried before. Since I didn't know which engine you preferred this build has the engine from my second build where I said the built-in engine seemed too fast. I also changed the Elevator travel from 24 degrees to 20 degrees which will tame down the pitch some. So please give me your thoughts on each of these so I'll know if anything needs to be changed. (mid wing, engine, elevator) I changed the name to include V2 so you can have both installed at the same time to compare. So the new file name is Funstar V2 EA.RFX.

MODIFIED V2 BUILD: From Mid Wing to Low Wing with less Elevator travel and McCoy Engine.

Okay I just tested the 2nd version and making it low wing did fix the inverted flying issue! I changed the elevator deflection to 18 degrees and also changed the engine power to 90%. Now it feels natural!!
The landing on this plane is as real as the original one. Deadstick landings were easy to make because of the wing design. This model glides just like my plane. Thanks a lot for your effort technoid, I'm very pleased and very grateful for bringing my old baby back to me!

That's great to hear I'm happy you have your favorite plane back in your hangar. I just did one more build to include the Elevator at 18 degrees and also this build is back to normal without V2 so you'll have your plane back without using a V2 version. At least I'd rather have it that way. So please download the latest version it should have everything you want except the 90 percent engine power I'll let you change that one thing. The reason is I'll be uploading this to the Swap Pages too so I'd like the engine power to be 100 percent and anyone that wants that change can make it. So here's the final version I'll be removing the other versions from my posts and only leave this one. I'll also upload it to the Swap Pages but probably not today since I have to take my wife to a Doctor's appointment. But look for it on the Swap Pages probably tomorrow morning.

If you look at the plane in the RF editor you can see the ring around the canopy I added. When I created it I made it 1/8 inch wide but it is smaller than the original so I'll go back and do one more version and make it wider. Here's a render showing it the way it is now.

Mriya

About the black ring, it is about 1 1/4 inches wide and if you notice you can see that on the back theres like 1 1/2 inches of fuselage before the ring's curve. I don't know if that explanation was clear but thats how I can describe it.

Yes I can see what you're talking about in the picture. Is the canopy on your plane separate from the fuselage? It probably is and overlaps the fuselage in the back where your black ring shows some of the fuselage color. The canopy on my plane was cut into the fuselage so I'll need to add further cuts on the fuselage to do what your talking about. I have to take my wife to a Drs. appointment about 35 miles away now so I'll be gone the rest of the day. But I'll work on it when I can.

Yes, that's right. The canopy is a bit larger and that's why the black tape is a little more to the back and shows the fuselage. I hope everything goes well for you and your wife. Have a good day and thank you!

Good deal I'm glad you like it. I'll be posting it to the swap pages soon but it might not be today I was working on it till early morning to finish it for you. Indeed! It made me very happy! I don't mind the elevator throw increase, hopefully more people will like my plane haha. By the way, if you ever run out of inspiration or planes to make let me know because I got plenty on mind and they are unique too! For example the GWS Formosa, It's a simple 3D foamy which we used to fly years ago in some sand dunes in Lima, Peru. I haven't seen any similar aircraft in Realflight so far.

I've been working on it a little more getting it ready for the swap pages. I always work with Dough Schluter on my planes, he's the brains behind the physics and has a gift for getting the most flyable performance out of them. So here's what I've done to it so far.

1. I restored the McCoy Text and Lightning Bolts on the engine that was removed from it when I started using it as a generic engine. But since I used the McCoy Engine Profile this time I restored the unique markings on the engine too. Also the original head color was blue so I'll fix that too.

2. I gave the physics to Doug and he's been improving them a bit for putting it on the swap pages. The elevator and rudder throws have been increased so the performance is a little brisker but you want a little more performance for the swap pages.

3. I went over the plane again and realized the wing cord was about one inch to narrow so I fixed that which gives the wing the correct 914 sq. in. of wing area.

For a plane that was put together out of a bunch of parts from different planes I modeled in the past it turned out pretty well. As for design ideas the GWS Formosa looks pretty cool but I'm one of those guys that generally creates my own designs. Of course they are always inspired by other designs but are unique in other ways so they're my own. Of course that generally means no one cares about them but me but that's okay I share them anyway. I'm way old school when RC planes were just models put together to fly, not scale models of real aircraft. The truth is RC models fly better because the dimensions are tailored differently. Plus back then lots of planes were scratch built original designs. So I'm the old guy I just haven't faded away yet. But your honest desire to get your plane back made me want to help you and I'm glad you like your bird.

That last post was music to my ears Technoid! I wanna see how the one from the swap pages will fly compared to the original EA you gave me. After what you said about the way you feel towards RC airplanes, I think it's an honor to had it modeled by you! haha, thanks a lot for that. As for me, I like scale models more, especially war birds... I like doing aerobatics on 3D planes but I'd rather sit hours and hours contemplating the majestic flight of an A6M or P-51 going around the field, but I digress, I'll be looking forward to your own models, do you have any indoor flying foamy? I'd like to practice more my indoor flying.
Once again, thanks a lot to you and Dough for the work you've put into my plane. It means a lot to me.

I just looked at the other pictures and went to YouTube and watched the video, very nice. What happened to the plane when you left for the US? In your first post you mention your name is Axl so is Mriya your last name? I'm asking because I want to mention in the comments when I post the plane to the swap pages that you ask in the Designer's Corner if someone could make one of your favorite planes, so I'm wondering what you want me to use as the name in the comment? So let me know. I'm finished working on it now I just have to post it to the swap pages, probably tomorrow morning. I just finished reworking a couple of engine parts I wanted to remake for a long time, so I took some time and did it. Now the engine is finally the way I want it. The throttle lever and needle valve clip has always needed a rework so now it's done. Ha.. it's nothing you can see outside of 3ds Max but I knew it was there and wanted to fix it. So she's done and will be on the swap pages tomorrow.

The plane is still in my house in Peru, in my grandpa's workshop probably just dusting because me and my uncle are the only people in the family who are into aeromodelism. My uncle has its own house and own planes so my Funstar is just abandoned... Hopefully I'll fly it again someday. I'm still years away from going back to my country.
My name is Axl Melendez... Mriya is just a nickname I just in all websites haha, comes from the Antonov An-225 Mriya. It was a first sight love so I've been using that nickname ever since. I really wanna try the last version of the Funstar, I'm really excited about it, can't wait til tomorrow!

Okay thanks for the info I was wondering what happened to it. When I said I was finished I forgot, there's always one last thing to do. I had some time so I thought I'd add the exhaust diverter that I seen in one of the pictures. Here's a render of it and you can also see the McCoy Text and Lighting Bolts on the engine and the correct head color for that engine. Blue. Ha.. So now she's really ready.

I just added your Funstar to the swap pages here's a link to it. It's been great fun helping you with this so enjoy your plane. Oh.. I always meant to go back and make the yellow color a better match, so I did it this morning before I uploaded it. Hope you like it, it's a lot closer to the yellow in your pictures.

Just finished flying the swap pages Funstar. It can't get more real than that. Fantastic job! The plane is really rich in detail, I wonder how hard it is to model and airplane on a computer. Is it possible to comment and grade in the swap pages? I didn't get an option for that. Come to think of it, the most recent posts don't have scores or comments either.
Oh by the way, the new engine you put looks badass! My old plane is on steroids now! Keep making the community happy Technoid, thanks a lot for my bird!

Cool Deal I'm glad to hear you like the plane from the swap pages. I was trying to refine it a little more after the first release on the forum and kept thinking of little details to add. They don't make it fly better but it's nice to take a look at them once in a while. And I'm sure glad I remembered to make the yellow closer to the pictures you posted, almost forgot that one. And then Doug tweaked the physics to get a little better performance too. All in all a great little project. Do you know how to use the RealFlight Editor to look closely at individual parts? That's a cool feature I didn't know about for a long time. If you don't know how once you're in the RF Editor click on the Visuals tab and pick a part from the list on the left side. Then use the mouse to move around and the mouse wheel to zoom in and out, a very cool feature that lets you check out anything. Thanks for the kind comments I appreciate them I'm getting ready to release another plane too.. Avenger, the 3D Profile plane I posted a picture of recently. She's ready to go I've just been waiting till I finshed Funstar to release her. So she's be on the swap pages soon, not sure when but soon.

Oh. Almost forgot. You should be able to leave a comment on a plane from the swap pages unless the person that released it disables comments. Look for the comment box at the bottom of the swap page.

While in the editor, after you click on the part, to center it; press and hold the left mouse button, to drag centered part, to any orientation you like. Oh, and don't forget, you have two Viewing options. Click; View>Select Layout>Layout 1 OR Layout 2 ;)
Nice work Technoid, and Doug! Great attention to detail.

Yes, and no. Due to a big uproar about how ratings were being given, the mods opted to give us the uploaders the option to turn off ratings if we like. They also added another feature that I have NEVER understood, nobody can see rates OR comments until that file gets 15 votes or more. I had several highly rated files until this change, and now I only have one. Personally, I really don't care about the rates. It does add a little bit of a good feeling to see the high numbers, but it's not why I do this. I started posting a link to the build thread and asking for comments to be placed in the thread instead. I do like to know if someone has a suggestion for improvements, and I feel this is about the best way since the comments got blocked.

Well, honestly that sucks, most of the times when I browse through the swap pages I look at the most downloaded files, but I know there is always hidden treasures but thanks to the grading system they are not popular..

Hi Guys,
I built and fly a 33% WACO YMF-5. would someone be interested in creating a color scheme for an existing model based off of my WACO? I would love to have one on the sim for my 7 yr old grandson to fly.

Thanks!!
Anthony

Im not saying I'll do it, just that its good practice to post pics of a request. And next time you might start your own thread. Maybe someone can get to it. If not, I might take it on later.
