View Full Version : Creating airports from scratch

I'm thinking of getting a digital camera so I can
re-create our two fields in Toronto. But,in the
meantime, has anyone succeeded in creating a field
totally from scratch? I managed to reduce Adair at Corvallis to just grass and distant trees (not in 3D) but that's the best I can achieve. Getting
rid of the background trees doesn't seem possible;
I think they're integral to the minimum, starting
photograph. What this software needs is an airport editing module which allows you the choice
of starting from a totally blank screen. Unless I've missed something it doesn't seem possible to
get to a totally blank screen as a starting point.

You can edit just about all you want in 3D mode. Why use a photofield background?
I have made my flying field and its fairly close, close enough to give the feeling of familiar background.
Unless you do not have G2, there is lots of room to improvise.

Because that's what I started with, will use 3D later. Most club members still have only the original version. I'll just keep plugging along until it comes right.

Im just curiuos what you try to achieve. The 3D in standard was pretty slow I thought, but it let you edit elevatiopns and things.
I havent even looked at the photo field thing so I am not any help, but that would be kind of neat to do that.

I started with photofield because the field similar to ours, Adair at Corvallis, only showed up in the airport menu if I disabled 3D.
Essentially what I'm trying to achieve is a field stripped down to grass only. Then I can start from scratch to build our field by adding trees and other things at our field by using photos I have taken to guide me. But it seems that all the airports in G2, when stripped of all objects, all end up with a basic picture of which a mountain or hill or some such structure is an integral part of the basic picture and cannot be removed. If I could get down to grass only IK can then achieve waht I want.

This question is finally answered. You *can't* do anything you like editing airports in G2.
Here's my question to Great Planes support and their answer:
Hi, there.
I'm writing to you at the suggestion of Mrs Annamarie Cross.
I have this software, including add-on CDs Vols 1 and 2.
I am trying to reproduce one of our flying fields (in Oakville,
Ontario) using photos I've taken as a guide to where to
place objects.
So far, whenever I start with an airport and edit it by removing
objects with a view to reducing it to *just* grass, I have failed.
The best I can achieve is a minimum picture which always seems
to incorporate as an integral irremovable object, a hill/s, mountain/s,
etc.
What I'm trying to do is get down to just grass or, even better, to
a totally blank "picture" and then to build from scratch to our fields.
Am I missing something? Or is this not possible? If I could do
this it would be a very valuable aid to newbies working on their
wings.
Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you and regards.
Richard.

Thank you for your recent e-mail.
Sir, I am sorry but doing what you are trying to that degree, is not possible. Real Flight allows you to place different buildings, trees, etc... You cannot however, make major changes to the terrain, or start with just a blank field. This has been a request and may be implemented at some future occasion. However, at this time I no exact information.
I hope you find this information helpful. Should you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. What can we say? You can not currently modify the photofield backdrop, but....
If all you want to do is start out with grass, why not use the option to set the terrain height to it's minimum allowable height (edit terrain). This will give you what you describe. It won't have anything but the sky in the background.

Many thanks for the suggestion, Jim! I'll work on it tonight. Perhaps I should read the *whole* manual all the way through .....! As they say, RTFM!
Again, many thanks.

Reducing the terrain height, removing all objects (a lot of distant trees are grouped in the tree editor) and using large scale grass squares gave me my grass aerodrome to build from the ground up so to speak :)

As most of you know from the multiplayer sessions that I have hosted I'm not too bad at creating and editing flying fields. I have found the easiest to work with so far is the Fun Fly Field.
Make a copy
now set your terrain height
remove everything you don't want
go ahead get rid of the runway
review your terrain height, just fly around in F5 mode. adjust the height terrain height if need be (maybe you've got a hill or dip on the field your trying to duplicate)
By flying around with the pilots view its easier to spot where to place things and gives you a better look at things.
Go to edit airport at anytime, your aircraft will freeze where it was and you will still be looking at what you were looking at the moment you clicked on edit airport can edit everything in front of you and also places you can't see at that moment.
Fly to another location and repeat the steps.
Now if only they would include patches of tall grass, corn, bean fields, it would make me real happy
Add what you want, where you want.
Have fun and keep praticing.
Rick I tried to email you so I could colaborate with you on the Toronto Flying Club but as it turns out your not a member of the Toronto R/C Flying Club nor the Toronto R/C Heli Flying CLub. But your with the Oakville Club I can't help you because I have never been there. I prefer a club that less then a 15 minute drive. Well Ok 25 minutes if there is traffic.
