Software Resetting - BUG

I thought it had gone away... but I am once again getting the re-calibrate your Interlink message and all my settings for RF6 are gone... the recent airplanes flown list is empty, the list of airports flown is gone, and my setup is messed and the screen in herky jerky as I fly.

I am getting tired of dealing with this about every 10th startup. Fix it already.

It is like you have just installed the software and are starting from scratch... all the previous planes flown list is empty. All the airfields flown is empty. You have to recalibrate the controller. You have to set up the microphone. You have to turn off the helicopter message (that is stupid to begin with).

This is happening a couple of times each week... I think it is blowing the settings storage file away for some reason.

We haven't seen this one! I can certainly understand your frustration. It does sound like your .ini is somehow being corrupted. I'm not sure what would do that. Perhaps the sim is crashing on exit, which wouldn't necessarily be noticeable since it could just look like it's closing normally. This seems pretty unlikely, but maybe some other process is going and deleting that file. It might be worth checking for its existence before you start RF; if it's totally missing, that's even stranger, but something worth knowing.

Do you run RF in fullscreen or windowed mode?

It might be worth trying a reinstall. You could elect to leave your custom content intact, so that you're only reinstalling the software itself (uninstalling will definitely delete your .ini, though). I don't have a specific reason in mind that this would help you, but what you describe is unusual enough that it makes me think something got corrupted somewhere, somehow.

It's hard to imagine what could happen to the .ini that would still leave it in place, but corrupt or remove so much content that the next time you start RealFlight it behaves as though it's a fresh install. If it were me, I'd probably start saving a copy of my .ini after each session, giving them each a unique name, and wait for the problem to happen so I could compare them and get a better idea of what's going on in there.

I notice that on my netbook, when I have RF6 running and put the computer in Sleep or Hibernate mode, upon awaking the computer, RF6 doesn't see Interlink Elite connected at the USB port. This is with Win7.

If I exit and reload RF6, everything is back to normal. So at least I don't need to reboot the computer.

It's in your Documents/RF folder. It's called realflight.ini.

Edit: You wouldn't have your Documents folder in a nonstandard location, would you?

There are two copies of realflight.ini

one is in c:\windows\realflight.ini ...... file was write protected

Second is c:\users\username\my documents\realflight6\realflight.ini

I installed a standard use of realflight... no changes.

Ryan... I will be watching the file... I think it might be a problem on exit... don't know why.

My solution to this problem is to get Real Flight set up the way I like it and then make a copy of the the file: c:\users\username\my documents\realflight6\realflight.ini and save it as realflight-good.ini in the same sub-directory.

When ever the system starts up and the software has reset itself... I just go to the subdirectory and delete the realflight.ini file and create a copy of my realflight-good.ini file and rename it as realflight.ini...

THIS SAVES ME A TON OF TIME GETTING REALFLIGHT THE WAY I LIKE IT. Every time I make a setup tweak that I like, I create another realflight-good.ini copy. This issue seems to be created when shutting down and the INI file is corrupted.

Ryan: It would be nice to be able to capture the INI file each time before entering the software... I wrote a CMD file to make a copy... next time it corrupts, I will have a copy of the INI before the software resets. That might tell us why. I will post the "corrupted" ini file next time it happens.

Here is my RunRealFlight.cmd file your path for the ini file will be different.

@echo off
copy "C:\Users\WJK\Documents\RealFlight 6\realflight.ini" "C:\Users\WJK\Documents\RealFlight 6\realflight-LastUse.ini"
"C:\Program Files (x86)\RealFlight6\RealFlight.exe"

This has happen a couple of times already this month... running realflight 6 lastest version with Win7 on a fast machine.

I GOT MY ANSWER!

The realflight.ini file was not corrupted, nor was it a partial file... the file was empty... nothing in it, zero bytes. I don't know why it happened, but RealFlight keeps destroying the INI file several times per week.

Now that I have a backup, it is not such a big deal.

I have a pretty good idea of when it happened now... I have an airport that I created that is totally hosed up... I think it happened while I was using the airport editor. Oh excuse me, environment facility editor.

Nope--no chage... it is still happening in Ver 6.5

I am getting sick of the bug-- everytime you see it reset to Carl Hensen field and have to re-calibrate, you are seeing the error that I am experiencing.

I thought this error had gone away... it had not occurred for a couple of weeks, now it is back and occurred twice in the last two days.

You loose all your settings... you have to calibrate your controller... you have to start over.. I cannot believe that I am the only one this is happening to. If you see the screen below, after you have setup the program and disabled this screen, you are experiencing the error. I have resorted to making a copy of a good version the realflight.ini file and using it each time the program messes up.
