Surprisingly good VR performance on lower-end hardware

We recently got very surprising results running RealFlight 8 in VR with the Oculus Rift on a machine with a CPU and video card that are well below the recommended minimum specs for the Rift. We wanted to share this info with all of you.

The machine has:
  • Intel i3-7100 Dual-core 3.90 GHz
  • MSI GTX 1050 Ti 4GT OC
You should not purchase a system/components like that and expect to run the average VR application well. However, in our testing RealFlight 8 sustained 90 FPS at almost all times on this system!

Graphics quality was set to Medium. We were using the Oculus Rift. We tested on heavier airports like Shipwreck HD and Flight School HD with more demanding vehicles. PhotoFields are obviously much less demanding.

We still recommend aiming a bit higher if you're purchasing a system or some new components. This is a dedicated system that won't be running anything but RealFlight. Still, we found it impressive, and it establishes a good baseline.

I found the same thing running Oculus Rift on a Dell All-in-one.

* Intel i5-4200M CPU @ 3.0 GHz
* Intel HD 4600 built in graphics
* 16 GB Ram

Photofields were all 90 fps which is fine for me. I didn't want to spend right now for a new PC.
