I was thinking about it, but it wouldn't look so good without the "pilot"

I think you could do a fair job of it. Remember though you can use as many polys as you want for the model minus the collision mesh up to 20k. If you can do a collision mesh that's just 250 polys then the model can be 19,750 polys. The collision mesh cannot exceed 1500 polys but is not required to be that big. I just want you to get all the polys you can.

Thanks Flare.

I ended up discarding the original "extruded spline" main wing (green in pic) in favor of a "box modeled" version. The rear stabs were also box modelled, it just makes rounded wingtips a snap for me to do.

Kinda got stuck trying to make the parts that bump out on the booms semi realistic. I guess their some sort of intake like the radiators are behind the engines anyway it was pretty tricky to get them to look this good.

cooling for intercoolers. These birds were turbo-super charged engines. Most folks think the bits on the top are some sort of thompson machine gun but they are the modified exhaust. Great history on this one. I hope you take the time to really appreciate what you are building.

I was playing around in max tonight and decided to setup some 3 views. After setting the material and bitmap to the plane, I started looking for the match bitmap close as possible option. Thought it was in object properties, but it's not. I know it's going to be a D'oh moment, but where do I find this feature?

I had a great Uncle that flew one in WWII. Many of his old war buddies who are still alive tell the story that when the P-38 came over to Europe, he took one of the first aircraft in theatre up for a ride and had to bail out due to compressibility and wouldn't pull out of a dive. He went on to fly the P-61 after the lightening and then a couple different jets in Korea.

Smile Lockheed P-38 Lightning

3 of the TOP 10 American Fighter Pilots, top scoring Aces, flew P-38's, Maj. Richard Bong, Maj. Tommy McGuire, and Capt. Mac McDonald.
All had Planes with rather unique color schemes, which beg to be done and would be a tremendous addition to anyone's flying collection.
