3DSMax for making the models, and photoshop for the color scheme.

Other use Wings, or Blender for the model, and GIMP for the color scheme. Because those are free programs.

3DS Max to create the model (free for 3 years - student program)
The free Kemax tool from knife edge to bring them into Realflight
Photoshop CS6 to color the model
Gimp because it has a good normal filter for doing the bump mapping (free)

Gimp can be used completely in place of Photoshop if you wish.

Ive used wings, blender, and max to model. Blender would be my least favorite of the three due to the fact you have to use such an outdated version to get your model into RF. Wings requires max or blender to transfer your model into RF because it cant handle pivots and linking. Therefore Ive moved completely into max for simplicity. And yes, the student version is ok for us to use (I have email confirmation direct from Autodesk).

GIMP is all I use for color schemes.

3DS max!! NOTE: 3DS max 2013 does not have a plugin avalable called KEMax 2013. KEMAX IS REQUIRED TO CHANGE .3DS FILES INTO .KEX FILES .kex files are the only type allowed to be imported in realflight.
