Protip: Converting FSX models to RF

Heyho,
I discovered a neat little tool I wanted to share with you. ModelConverterX is the name and it essentially allows you to take any FSX aircraft and convert it to a .obj file that can be imported into 3DSMax and then put into RF. You obviously need some knowledge on how Max works.

http://www.scenerydesign.org/modelconverterx/

The process is relatively simple: Import FSX .mdl file into ModelConverterX, export as .obj, import .obj into 3DSMax (2012), throw all used textures into one file, remap everything by selecting stuff by texture and rescaling the UVs, making some materials for reflectivity and stuff, reduce polys if needed, split and merge meshes as required, name stuff, set pivots, scale as required, export as KEX and import to RF. Works especially well with high quality payware models.

Keep in mind that you must not upload these to the Swap Pages without the explicit permission of the original author of the aircraft, but for your personal use, this trick is pretty nifty

Here are some models I converted, Nemeth Designs EC135, BO105 and BK117

Totally agree. Best part is, you can just take about any existing livery and slap it on just like that! I won't be uploading converted stuff to the swaps though, but maybe someone can gather some inspiration from this?

I understand that you don't want to upload the models to the swaps, but is it too much to ask for some models you converted sent to me privately?

Yepp it would be, I can't do that, sorry. I paid for these models and don't want to get myself in trouble.

If it helps I actually do own the fsx deluxe edition with all the stock aircraft. My reason for not doing this myself is that I'm not really great at configuring the physics in realflight.

I think he means the aircraft that he converted are some of the Payware aircraft that you can purchase for FSX. Those can't be shared even to install into another copy of FSX. Its like me lending out my Expansion packs to Realflight. Not something that should be done.

I wonder if this would also work with Xplane aircraft? I have quite a few that I have purchased over the years that would look pretty nice in Realflight. Even better if I could get wing flex and more Polies

Well, it could be that he assumed I didn't own fsx and that was the reason he couldn't do it.

The helicopters he imported are not stock aircraft for FSX. I think stock helicopters are the Robinson R22 and the Jet Ranger. Might be another one maybe an Westland? but this is what I can recall without opening the program but I know that it isn't those models pictured above.

I can't share the helis for the reasons Chris stated in #8

Chris, I've tried X-Plane, but haven't been lucky so far. I also own a couple nice Helis there that would look cool in RF. ND BK 117, Dreamfoil R22, AS350B3+, Bell 206, Bell 407 and Alabeo R66.. Man I spent a sugar honey ice tea load of money on these

Oh and btw, the 3rd FSX heli was the Agusta Westland EH101

I love x-plane... but of course they(xplane&rf) are for two different audiences. I can't believe there is not a poly problem getting helis converted from x-plane to RF7.5. Some of the x-plane models are hugely detailed. And each model purchased can set you back some big money. I just buy the planes that I actually have the possibility of flying in the real world (172, T22, etc.). I hope to add a realistic collective and cyclic hardware setup to my sim for the helicopters... $800-$1200, so that is not inexpensive. Generally I fly helicopters in x-plane with a nice joystick.

Neat. I have FSX loaded with many addons. FYI the RF7 Interlink Elite is recognized by it and can be used as a controller in FSX. I use a complete Saitek X52 Pro control system in mine to make it realistic as possible. You might check one out 12oclockhigh .. could be what you are looking for.

Off to test this out. Thanks much.

I have almost all the Saitek flight controls, yoke, rudder pedals, trim wheel, radio stack, autopilot, throttles, switch panel... has not been cheap... It is my form of personal entertainment.

However, that does not help with helicopter realism. You need a cyclic stick, rudder pedals and a collective stick. Much more expensive in my search.
