F6F Hellcat with folding wings and tank drop.

From the team that brought you the Pogo.

New from www.rcwarbirds.com another custom rcwarbird for G3, the F6F Hellcat. This plane features folding wings and dropping external fuel tank. This version is modeled after the Ziroli kit and around the same size and weight.

This plane will work with standard G3, no addon needed.

Thanks to David Zurawski for the beautiful 3d model and to inkyOO who worked out the folding wings and tank drop and conversion to G3, and to opjose and Paul Grubich for the flight/physics model.

To operate wing folding use dual rate switch, to drop tank use upper left 3 position switch. This action is not fully perfected as yet so expect to experiment. Make sure automatic reset is switched off in your G3 setup file or Hellcat will reset when tank is dropped.

Download custom rcwarbird Hellcat F6F GX3 file on your desktop then go into G3 program and select "Import" from the file list. Select the hellcat_EA.g3x file you have on your desktop. Go into the Custom aircraft select section to find it. Make sure your Realflight controller throttle trim is all the way up or you will not have full power.

KMOT how did you import this aircraft? When I download this file from the above link I get a zipped file. When I unzip the file I get a folder with 8 files none of which are recognized by G3 when trying to import a .g3x...

Suggestions?

Please see the sticky at the top.

You unzipped the file, which you shouldn't.

Doesn't work if I don't unzip it either.... G3 will not import it. BTW I had no trouble importing the Pogo.

Yes there is something wrong with this file. let me redo it

Ok just tried again and there is no way to fix it. If I upload the g3x file it puts it into a zip and when you open that zip several files are unziped. How can I upload just the main EA_g3x file?

Hi inky00,

Are there collision objects on the main wings ? I love the fact it tries to roll when you fold up the wings in mid air then corrects itself when you put them back out

regards,

Tony

Hi Nemo,no collision meshes were used on this model.

This indicates two problems.

Inky00: Collision meshes are VERY important for how G3 determines both how the model collides with objects, but more directly, how the model behaves on the ground.

We saw this with the Pilatus. The collison mesh did not accurately reflect the length of the gears so the plane "sank" into the ground... and it did not take off correctly.

Could you PLEASE add the mesh?

The second problem is the physics model, something I was hoping to correct.

The plane SHOULD NOT "roll" when the wings are retracted in flight.

If you look at the model in the physics editor you'll see that one wing retracts backward from a physics standpoint. That is what causes the roll.

This is because the wings were created as symetrical entities, so the values for retraction were applied to both wings... only problem is that they should be somewhat reversed for the "other" wing.

To fix, the wings need to be treated as seperate entities for the physics.

The plane SHOULD drop like a stone when the wings are retracted in flight, nose down, then if the wings are re-extended, it should resume flight...

Of course, kids don't try this at home with the HellCat you may have parked in your driveway!

Hellcat

Absolutely superb - and it flies well too ! I'm not always sure when the drop tank is going to come off, but that just adds to the fun.
Thank you all, your hard work continues to be appreciated.
Cheers,
Trevot

just change the file extension from .zip to .g3x

mine does the same thing, i just rename it in the save as box.

make sure to select all files in the save as type box (compressed (zipped) folder is default).

BTW, great plane!
