Do you have anything like Norton Firewall, or Internet security installed?

Try turning off Norton then doing the update.

Let's see what you have running in the background. Start with MSCONFIG (which will only show the basics) and post the list of what you have under the startup tab.

Well to give you an idea, I only have six. That six also includes enough protection that I can safely visit underground sites where angels fear to tread. So I'd say you need some serious clean up.

I'd recommend getting a program called RUNALYZER or SPYBOT S&D either of which will do a much more in depth analysis of your startup state. RUNALYZER is a subset of SPYBOT and just looks at the startup programs. If you need help figuring out what you need and what's crap, let us know and we'll see if we can assist.

OK, I've gone through the list and marked it as follows:
- You probably need these
- Unnecessary
- Unnecessary, but if you use one keep it
I couldn't figure out what these were
- Seriously BAD, definitely delete this one

These are mostly just my opinions, however, I am a serious computer geek - certified in many operating systems, and have been in charge of computer support departments for over 15 years. To be on the save side just disable what you don't want first and test your system. If everything works the way you want it to, then the entries are safe to delete.

To get more info on what something is, try searching some of the on-line process libraries. One of these is ProcessLibrary.Com

It removes temporary files that may be corrupted, forcing a new download.

Even if the cleanup didn't correct the problem you were trying to fix, I bet your machine is a lot faster now.

If clearing the cache doesn't work for you, the next step is to run SPYBOT. Get the program from the link I gave you before. Download its updates and scan your system, you don't have to install the permanent (resident) protection if you don't want to.

The fact that you had NEWDOT in your startup shows you had at least some infestation of spy or ad ware, there may be more.
