What should I upgrade to get better fps

Here are my computer specs:
1.68 Ghz
512 ram
256mb video card

I am getting less than 20fps with most of the graphics turned off. It's really just a question of upgrading the chip or expanding the memory. What would make more of a difference? I can go up to 2.2Ghz chip (Athlon XP 3200+) on my motherboard. Or I can add 512mb ram.

Is that in a Photo Feild. IE Sod Farm ?

there are other settings you can drop. Outside G3.

on my DesktopPC. I droped Anty Ailiasing. and also some other settings.

I get a sustained 20 FPS in photo fields. but it can go as low as 7fps if I am online with more than 3 other flyers about.

I also droped Smoke.
Usualy fly Electric anyway.

Maybe you have an Athlon 2000+
or a Core duo with 1.68 GHz(ok obviously not after reading your update-ideas) ... who knows...

Maybe you have 256 MB shared Memory-graphics or a high-end card,
we don´t know either.

Please give more Information about your components or follow these instructions:

Yes, it is in photofields. Smoke is off and when I lower the shadow detail it goes up to 40fps and up to 90 with it completely off. On non-photofield levels I barely get 20fps even with shadows and smoke off. I have all newest drivers. Here are more specific specs:

AMD Athlon XP 2000+ (1.68Ghz)
XFX Nvidia GeForce 6200 (256MB DDR2)
512MB DDR SDRAM

I was using some old video card before this with 64MB, and saw little improvement after upgrading to my new one which confused me because I was expecting a lot more. It did, however, only cost me $40 bucks online, so I'm not to sure how good of a card it is or if it even matters. I completely reformatted my machine and this is the ONLY thing installed on it.

In your shoes I would choose only those upgrades that could be transferred over to a new and faster machine.

Or go right to a faster machine... with more RAM and a better video card if possible.

G3 runs best in 2gigs of memory with a dedicated DX9 video card, and a fast processor, ideally with a dedicated sound card ( not the integrated video or audio devices ).

It screams on the dual core machines.

The RAM and CPU upgrade both, may help you hang on to your existing machine a while longer, but I would assume that it is now out of date and work from there.

e.g. give it to a significant other after adding more RAM and wiping the hard drive, etc...

Yes it is a bit out of date. I actually stole it back from my brother because Realflight wouldn't work on my laptop. The only reason I'm using it is to learn to fly a heli. I'm planning on getting the Blade 400 when it comes out. I cannot justify buying a new machine because I already have an excellent laptop and would only use a desktop for Realflight. But I'm mainly wondering how much of a difference an extra 500MHz and Gig of memory would do.

Installing both would substantially help.

Ram

but they go hand in hand. so it would be hard to say just one

My PC is more on the CPU side 3.06Mhz duel. but my ram is only 512mb. And I still get bad frame rates.

I use an ATI Raidon 9550 with 256Mb mem.

try going into your actual video card settings via windows. ive turned things of in there that give me a huge jump in frame rates like filters, texture details, turn off vertical sync, mipmap detail, buffers etc

These are the specs of the system I just got done building and it runs G3.5 without breaking a sweat. I get 200+ fps in a loaded multiplayer session. Hope this points you in the right direction

My PC

configuration experiments

I have experimented with a few configurations,

But what I recommend 2 gig memory, 512 meg video card, at a 3 gig Processor, I just recently downloaded the Moffet Ire field, when trying it on a friends pc who had onboard video 1 gig memory a 3 gig processor, it was like looking at still pictures, I gave him my old 128 meg APG card and it was world apart.

But when we tried the 2 gig memory, 512 meg AGP video card, at a 3 gig Processor configuration was perfect now freezing at all,

We did try a 1.5 gig memory, 512 meg AGP video card, at a 3 gig Processor configuration it did struggle a little.

well i got done upgrading my PC and have the motherboard maxed out, can't do anything else to it and it still has bad frame rates. My new specs are:

2.0 Ghz (Athlon XP 2400)
3 GB of RAM
256 MB video card (Nvidia GeForce 6200)

These seem like pretty good specs. How good does a computer have to be to run RealFlight? Seems like you have to have 3 Ghz chip and 512MB video before it starts working right.

I think the 6200 series card is the problem. You will have to turn down a lot of things to get it to run smooth. Start with smoke/details and shadows. These are things that give the lower end cards trouble the most.
