Dual build Thread

This Thread will chronicle the process of modeling, mapping, and physics for two models.
The first is a plane dubbed the "Chester Goon". A 1930's AirRacer named from characters in the Popeye cartoons. The engine was a straight six Menasco Buccaneer. This long nosed aircraft looks very sleek and streamlined but the tiny manually retracted landing gear give it a ungainly appearance. I intend to be a bit more detailed with the actual model this time. With details such as louvers in the cowling and a sliding canopy to name a few.
The second is a plane suggested in another thread by Twoeleven.
The Lockheed-Sirrus was an aircraft built by Jack Northrop and Gerald Vultee while engineers for Lockheed in 1929 at the request of Charles Lindbergh. Lindbergh and his wife later used this plane to fly to the far east. Powered by a 680 HP Wright R-1820 The Sirrus was capable of flying 975 at a cruising speed of 150 miles per hour.
These planes will be built part for part. Meaning when part from each is complete I will post them to this thread together. In the end both will be posted to the swaps the same day.

Wink Dual Build Thread

A series of really well modeled and built Golden Age 1930's air racers would be great for RF. Maybe you can add the "Miles Atwood Special" and "Miss LosAngeles", the" Jeep", may be Ben Howard's "Ike" or "Mike" or maybe "Pete",maybe a "Turner Special" or a "Keith Rider R-3, just to name a few of the great names in Air Racing during the Pre War Years.

That may be a possibility since I really like the looks of these old planes.

Update!

I am still hard at work on these two planes. I am Almost done with the Goon's fuselage, and will be starting on the Lockheed Sirrus fuse later today, and hope to post screenies of both fuselages first thing tomorrow. Had an endless stream of visitors the past couple of days which has kept me from getting these models going.

Smile Some Progress!

Well had some time to myself today, so I thought I'd Get the two fuselages done today. When I say done I mean "the outer fuse and wing stubs". You may notice the louvers on the Goon. I decided to model those rather than put them in the bump map. They are very deep and are a prominent part of the aircraft. As the Goon stands now I'm at 3,357 poly's with flight surfaces, cockpit details, and gear left to go. I should still come in under 10,000 if I optimize the model before export. The Lockheed Sirrus is at 2650 with the same amount left to model. So there you have it- with 9 hours in part no.1 is complete.

Day Two

Thanks Spot242,
Day two is down and I have completed the basic form of these two airplanes. They now have their respective fuselage, flight surfaces, and control surfaces. Now I just have to model the gear and details. Even with the new model work I'm only at 4,283 polys on the Goon. I went over the model and got rid of some unneeded edge loops. I'm a bit higher with the Sirrus but thats due to the addition of "The classic 9 cylinder engine" I borrowed from the repository. The sirrus now sits at 7,711 polys. I will repay the repository with a part soon.

Boof, smooth looking stuff, great work.

I think it is the Sirius, not Sirrus, as a point on the Lockheed.

Also, saw a few pictures of it on floats! Looks beautiful so I thought I'd drop this off so you may have it, you know, for future reference...
