Question Will G3 have a mulitplayer server?

Does G3 require another server?

If so, does a G3 server exist?

Is a G3 server in process or exist shortly?

G3's will only multiplayer with G3's?

G3's multiplayer functionality connects to a different server than G2 does, but it works in a similar way from the user's perspective. Under the hood, it's all been rewritten. This is already up and running.

G2 and G3 cannot share multiplayer sessions. The way they work and the information they share are vastly different.

Ryan,

Can you help me with the settings on my firewall? I can't seem to figure out the proper settings to get G3 to connect. I maintain my own hardware firewall for VPN connections between my home and business and can setup the proper ports if you can clue me in as to what ports need to be opened.

I'll get the guy who actually worked on multiplayer to come and see if he can help you out.

As with G2 and other DirectPlay games, you should open up UDP ports 2300-2400 for both inbound and outbound traffic.

Vitek,

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm still not able to see any servers when I search for listing servrs. Also, and I may have to contact Zyxel (firewall manufacturer) on this one, but when I try to host a muliti-player it will not post because I use a private IP on my LAN behind the firewall, anything you know I can do to fix this?

You probably won't see many servers running. Either people are having problems similar to yours and not reporting them, or they are not trying to host.

As for your error message, I assume that you are getting the error message that reads

Unable to find a public IP address. Please check your network configuration.

Is this right? Does your firewall do UPnP and do you have it enabled? If you answered yes to all three, then DirectPlay is not giving us the forwarding address as we expect. Let me know if this is the case and I'll look at it.

If you are not using UPnP, you need to set up port forwarding for the port that you want to host on before you start hosting. Either that, or put the hosting machine outside the firewall in the DMZ.

Travis,

You were right on the money, turned on UPnP and the server now registers.
Is there a server based app that I can run on a Win2k3 and not have to purchase another copy of the G3? I have a server at my office I will be willing to setup as a G3 server for everyone to use if there is way.

Thanks for all the help.

Awesome. Glad to hear that helped. If you have any more networking trouble with G3, please let me know.

As for your other question... At the moment, G3 multiplayer is only a peer to peer system. So, to be legal, you would need another copy of G3. A client-server implementation would have significant advantages for the players, but would require dedicated machines to run the server process.

Travis,

That is what I wanted to do, if they do come up with server side software please let me know and I'll be happy to configure one.

And again thanks for all your help.
